1. Selection of Tip Shape & Flute Count
Flutes are the deep spiral grooves wrapped around the end mill, and the sharp edge is called the tooth or flute.
1, 2, 3, 4, or 6 Flutes
Select based on purpose
CNC routers rotate clockwise. The chip evacuation direction (top or bottom) depends on the spiral orientation.
2. Performance Comparison by Flute Count
Higher Flute Count (2+ Flutes)
Multiple cuts per rotation result in a smoother finish and higher rigidity. However, smaller chip pockets may hinder evacuation in deep pockets.
Lower Flute Count (1 Flute Focus)
Large chip pockets prevent sawdust buildup and reduce stress on the tool. Generally quieter and cooler during high-speed plastic or soft wood cutting.
3. Strategic Selection for Woodworking
Recommended Flute Count by Environment
- - Global industry standard for general wood
- - Low machine power or vibration issues
- - Slotting where chip evacuation is critical
- - Fast feed operations
- - Side cutting and finishing (Profiling)
- - Processing high-hardness materials
Importance of RPM & Feed Optimization
If 2-flute bits cause burning or poor results, it's likely an RPM/Feed mismatch rather than a tool defect. Adjust values by ±15% from base settings to find the sweet spot for your specific machine.
